With more freedom doesn't necessarily come more creativity. Like driving through a mountain pass without guardrails, navigating shifts in education without guardrails can feel unsettling. As teachers, there's a delicate balance between letting go of control to allow students freedom to create with a sense of ownership, and chaos. There is a similar effect with adults on staff. Through visiting schools in United States, Europe and Asia, as well as talking with industry leaders who are known for cutting edge teams, and my own research, I created a new iteration for leadership design with the hope of seeing a positive shift. This shift included entirely redesigning the interview and hiring process as well as professional development, collaboration opportunities, and celebrating educators taking risks. Parents and students voiced noticing a positive shift even within the first month of school.
