As the Director of College Career Readiness for English Language Learners for the Division of English LanguageLearners & Students Support at the New York City Department of Education, Gilberto Garcia, supports more than 450public high schools that serve over 150,000 students, as well as hundreds of other alternative secondary institutionsacross New York City Department of education. Mr. Garcia is a strong voice for education that provides equity for allstudents.A former middle school teacher, high school assistant principal, and Director of Student Services – ESL & Assessment forthe CEI-PEA CFN 535, Mr. Garcia has earned a respectable reputation for his vision and commitment to education. Oneof the highlights of Mr. Garcia’s career would definitely be the design and implementation of various initiatives that bridgethe learning gaps for English Language Learners and students with special needs. He has successfully dedicated considerabletime and energy implementing the measured practices of the School Quality Review since its inception in public schools.This has proven extremely beneficial in promoting an overall wholesome learning environment in his schools. Throughfocused inquiry practices, curriculum and assessment teacher teams, and differentiated professional development, he hassignificantly improved school performance.Mr. Garcia has served as an adjunct professor at several accredited national and international universities, such as LaUniversidad Nacional Pedro Henriquez Ureña, La Universidad Autónoma de Santo Domingo, Fairleigh DickinsonUniversity and Columbia University. Mr. Garcia earned a B.A. from SUNY/Old Westbury, a Master of Science in TeachingEnglish as a Second Language from the Graduate School of Education at Fordham University, and a Master of Science inSchool Administration and Supervision, from the Graduate School of Education at Fordham University. He is currentlypursuing a doctorate degree in Instructional Leadership at Saint John University. Gilberto is the proud father of twoadorable kids.
